Bethann Moran-Handzlik

Previously Exhibited

Combining joyous brushwork and careful observation, the seasoned Wisconsin painter Bethann Moran-Handzlik, generates works that are at once accurate and poetic.  The artist takes large format canvases into the landscape to paint from direct observation, while also engaging her imagination and memory.  The paintings are accomplished in all seasons and the artist is equally invigorated painting outside in cold winter landscapes, spring woodlands or sunlit gardens.   The artist earned an MFA from University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, a BA from St. Norbert College and has recently left a life teaching at universities to return to painting full time.  Her work has been exhibited nationally, and she has been the recipient of fellowships, grants and awards.  She lives in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin with her husband, the poet Patrick Moran

“I love being outside.  Standing in the same spot for three weeks or more making a painting is a deep pleasure.  Animals around me slowly acclimate to my presence.  Once a mouse took a nap by my toes and another time a hummingbird persistently attacked an emerald-green scarf on my head.   Language often leaves me. At times I feel I disappear.   I am sincerely attempting to harvest a vision, built through my direct engagement, as an offering to those who may need to see it.  Like baking a loaf of bread and delivering it warm to a friend, I hope the paintings will delight, nourish, and support you on your path to joy.”
