As the title of Joe Hameister‘s new painting “Pink Foil” suggests, the blooming Kalenchoe is not the main focus of the artist. Rather, he is interested in how the various elements of this deceptively simple still life interact with each other so the composition verges on abstraction. Although modest in size at just 8×10 inches, it is abundant with commanding brush strokes suggesting heightened light and shadow. Each area is carefully depicted. The subtle pink light reflecting on the plate diverges from the active background which is packed with lively texture and dramatic colors. The variegated leaves and fuchsia blossoms emerge from their lively, ubiquitous packaging as if ready to take on a new challenge. Joe Hameister will be participating in our biennial exhibition Summer in Wisconsin which takes place July 1st through September 3rd. Click here to see more work by Joe Hameister.
