The Tory Folliard Gallery is pleased to present a new exhibition, Chris Berti / Food and Fauna.

Born in New York, Chris Berti, earned his BFA from Alfred University in New York and his MFA in ceramics from Cranbrook Academy in Michigan. After inheriting stone-carving tools from his grandfather, a New York City stonemason and bricklayer, Berti was inspired to carve objects from limestone and salvaged brick.

By utilizing found ceramic drainage tiles, bricks, marble, and other various stones, Berti creates sculptures of animals and everyday objects. With methodical precision, honesty, and care, he carves images through a gradual, subtractive process. Berti allows a form to reveal itself slowly and subtly, much like an archaeologist exposes an artifact or fossil. By slowly carving and paying attention to detail, these images can present themselves in unexpected ways.

Chris Berti’s work is in the collections of the Swedish National Museum, Stockholm, Sweden; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington D.C.; Cranbrook Art Museum, Bloomfield Hills, MI; Montreal Museum of Art, Quebec; Racine Art Museum, Racine, WI; Brooks Museum of Art, Memphis, TN; Mint Museum, Charlotte, NC, among many others.

The Tory Folliard has represented the artist since 1988.
