Peter Gehrig Sitting Still

On exhibit through May 25th

Wisconsin painter, Peter Gehrig, is an expert at finding beauty in the ordinary, infusing his canvases with a profound sense of tranquility and nostalgia. Drawing inspiration from the simple moments of everyday life, Gehrig effortlessly captures the essence of his subjects, transporting viewers to serene landscapes and inviting interiors.

Gehrig's distinctive style is characterized by his soft lighting, loose atmospheric brushstrokes, painterly application, and muted color palettes. Through these techniques, he skillfully alludes to the passage of time, inviting viewers to contemplate the subtle shifts in light and mood throughout the day.

Peter Gehrig received his BFA in drawing and painting from the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, the city where he now makes his home and studio. Tory Folliard Gallery has represented the artist since 2021.

A FALL DAY Oil on Canvas, 11 x 14” (Image), 12 1/2 x 15 1/4” (Framed)

Once I start a painting there is no telling where it may go. Sometimes I work an image from start to finish with only minor tweaks, other times the painting I’ve started gets completely wiped out halfway through, and a new image forms.

I want something that surprises me a bit, but at the same time reflects what I’ve already experienced. I love playing with color and composition within a painting. Exploring color and shape relationships on a canvas is an endless pursuit.

I am constantly stopping, sitting still, and looking at what I am doing with my paintings. In the end, I want a quiet painting that unfolds slowly, which rewards you the longer you look at it and helps balance this loud, fast-paced world we live in.
