Tom Uttech

Wisconsin native Tom Uttech is one of the Midwest’s most acclaimed landscape painters, known for creating richly imagined scenes inspired by his travels throughout the Boundary Waters of Minnesota and the wilderness regions of Ontario and Manitoba. Working from his converted barn-studio outside Milwaukee, Uttech draws upon decades of firsthand experience in these remote landscapes, transforming them into poetic visions that blend observation, memory, and imagination.

Widely recognized for his contributions to contemporary American landscape painting, Uttech’s work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Milwaukee Art Museum, New Orleans Museum of Art, Tucson Museum of Art, Museum of Wisconsin Art, and numerous collections throughout the United States.

The Tory Folliard Gallery has represented Tom Uttech since his first exhibition in 1990.

“My paintings are based on my experiences walking and paddling through the northern woods and the Boundary Waters. I find myself drawn toward the north country for inspiration because that’s where I grew up. It’s in my blood. It is my home”

-Tom Uttech

Oil on Panel,

9 x 26 ½” (Frame)

“The characteristics of the place that I have identified as ‘home’ are important ingredients that create the sense of the north woods. Glacial evidence from mounds of exposed bedrock. The erratic house-sized rocks lying around the woods. The evergreen trees, the moss that grows on the ground, the magic of hearing wolves howling at night, the light, the quality of reflections in the water. It all wraps up into a single thing.

-Tom Uttech
