From Pinc's richly textured, graphic compositions and Michels's playful, expressive imagery to Coffey's luminous, joyful abstractions and Grant's bold use of pattern and form, each artist demonstrates a unique command of color. Whether vibrant and exuberant or subtle and layered, these four artists show how color can transform a work of art—and the space around it.

Guzzo Pinc

Guzzo Pinc creates dynamic abstract paintings that merge bold color, graphic elements, and representational imagery. Working on jute-mounted canvases, he actively manipulates the painting surface through layering, scraping, and revision, creating a rich balance of spontaneity with structure.

Pinc earned a B.A. from the University of Richmond and an M.F.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His work has been exhibited widely throughout the United States, at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art and the Elhurst Art Museum.

Lon Michels

Neo-pop artist Lon Michels creates striking patterned paintings that explore themes of identity, religion, and contemporary society. Moving beyond simple likeness, he captures the essence of his subject through vivid color, intricate detail, and a highly personal visual language that rewards close examination.

Michels earned a B.A. from Ripon College and an M.F.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After graduating from Ripon College, he moved to New York City as a working artist and was later hired by the late sculptor Louise Nevelson, with whom he worked as a studio assistant for 5 years. He is a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts award and was nominated for the Joan Mitchell Arts Award. His work has been exhibited throughout the United States, including a career retrospective at the Museum of Wisconsin Art.

Marion Coffey celebrated the beauty in everything she painted. She found joy in capturing the flowers in her garden, the interiors of her daughter’s home, and the gorgeous vistas from her travels. It took many years of keen observation and experimenting to arrive at the bold, expressive style that characterizes her painting. Her style was her own - daring in color and young in spirit.

Born in Milwaukee, Coffey worked as a commercial illustrator early in her career. Influenced by the 19th- and 20th-century French artists Vlaminck, Matisse, and the Fauves, Coffey became less interested in realistic depictions and began painting with vibrant colors and expressive brushstrokes. Over the last two decades, she developed a composition of large interlocking shapes reminiscent of one of her favorite painters, Gabriele Münter, a 20th-century German artist.

Coffey studied at the American Academy of Art and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work is represented in public and private collections throughout the United States, including the White House and the archives of the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C.

Ben Grant

Ben Grant's dynamic and bold abstract paintings are characterized by layered surfaces, intricate patterns, and a sense of color that speaks to his unfiltered approach to creating his own visual language. His references include, but are certainly not limited to, religious idols, hot rods, comic books, carnival rides, album covers, color charts, toys, classical painting, road signs, psychedelia, pin striping, and outsider art. While not all of these references can be initially grasped at first glance. Ben strives to build these visually immersive compositions that reward sustained looking and encourage personal interpretation.
