“Children with their vast capacity for wonderment weave tales of gossamer, create magic kingdoms, all from meager means, passing through invisible portals to lands of untold enchantment. “The Deacon’s Seat”, a solo show of paintings and works on paper by Fred Stonehouse is currently on exhibit at the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art at the University of Alabama. “The Deacon’s Seat” title Stonehouse chose for the show refers to a bench of split logs running the length of a bunkhouse in logging camps. The storyteller would entertain loggers after settling in for the night, but only hold the seat as long as the audience was entertained. According to Stonehouse, “holding the seat for an extended period was the storyteller’s mark of pride.
