“The Deacon’s Seat”, a solo show of paintings and works on paper by Fred Stonehouse is currently on exhibit at the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art at the University of Alabama. “The Deacon’s Seat” title Stonehouse chose for the show refers to a bench of split logs running the length of a bunkhouse in logging camps. The storyteller would entertain loggers after settling in for the night, but only hold the seat as long as the audience was entertained. According to Stonehouse, “holding the seat for an extended period was the storyteller’s mark of pride.

In conjunction with the exhibit, Fred Stonehouse also presented a lecture at the Gorgas Library and spent a day with advanced students in the Unviersity of Alabama’s Arts & Sciences Studio Arts Program critiquing their work.

Bill Reid holding a musical sculpture in his home studio.
Visiting an artist’s studio is generally an entertaining and educational experience. Visiting the home and Prairie School studios of sculptor Bill Reid was both of these as well as astonishing, enchanting, and breathtaking. Influenced by nature, automatons, and his own Utopian philosophy, Reid has been creating brightly painted steel sculptures in the form of anthropomorphic creatures, many of which move, for more than twenty years. Full of sass and humor, Bill Reid‘s sculptures are a pleasure to experience.

The term sounding refers to taking a measurement in deep water or the process of observing and analyzing atmospheric conditions. Jason Rohlf‘s new series, Soundings reflects his interest in exploring these ideas through paint and collage. Although he is working on flat surfaces, his asymmetrical, organic compositions suggest space, movement, and a compelling energy, perfectly balanced through color and texture. The work in Soundings is a continuation of Rohlf‘s keen observation, imagined measurements, and Soundings is Rohlf‘s fifth solo exhibition with Tory Folliard Gallery.

It is always a pleasure to visit an artist in the studio. We recently had the good fortune of meeting with artist T.L. Solien who showed us his new body of work, created during his sabbatical and inspired by a long trip to the western states. Clearly T.L. Solien has been busy as seen in the wall of mixed media collages on paper above.
